Blood Parasites in Captive Penguins

چکیده

Birds may be host to a number of species of blood-inhabiting protozoa and nematode worms transmitted by haematophagous arthropods. Protozoan parasites include haemosporidia in the genera Plasmodium, Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon, Hepatozoon, and Babesia, and haemoflagellates in the genus Trypanosoma. Most families of birds are susceptible to blood protozoal infection in the wild (Bennett et al. 1982) and prevalence, especially in the tropics, may be high (>30%, Jones 1985). Nematode worms in the family Filariidae occur in many species of birds, but they have not been reported from penguins, and will not be considered further in this paper.

Application of in-situ hybridization for the detection and identification of avian malaria parasites in paraffin wax-embedded tissues from captive penguins

In captive penguins, avian malaria due to Plasmodium parasites is a well-recognized disease problem as these protozoa may cause severe losses among valuable collections of zoo birds. In blood films from naturally infected birds, identification and differentiation of malaria parasites based on morphological criteria are difficult because parasitaemia is frequently light and blood stages, which a...

Epidemiology and molecular phylogeny of Babesia sp. in Little Penguins Eudyptula minor in Australia

Blood parasites are potential threats to the health of penguins and to their conservation and management. Little penguins Eudyptula minor are native to Australia and New Zealand, and are susceptible to piroplasmids (Babesia), hemosporidians (Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon, Plasmodium) and kinetoplastids (Trypanosoma). We studied a total of 263 wild little penguins at 20 sites along the Australian ...

African Black-Footed Penguins Avian Malaria

Ten captive-reared African black-footed penguins (Spheniscus demersus) from a large outdoor colony were monitored for avian malaria, using severa l diagnostic tests. One treatment regimen was evaluated. Thin smear blood eva luation enabled detection of seven parasitemias involving Plasmodium relictum a nd Plasmodium elongatum in the penguins. Leukocytosis (relative lymphocytosis) was characteri...

Plasmodium blood parasite found in endangered Galapagos penguins (Spheniscus mendiculus)

This is the first report of a Plasmodium blood parasite found in the Galapagos Archipelago. Phylogenetic analyses place this parasite, recovered from endangered Galapagos penguins (Spheniscus mendiculus), within the genus Plasmodium, and suggest a close relationship to some of the most dangerous lineages of Plasmodium that have been known to cause severe mortality and morbidity in captive pengu...

Do blood parasites infect Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) in the wild? Prospective investigation and climatogeographic considerations.

Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) are native to Argentina, Chile and the Falkland Islands. Magellanic penguins are highly susceptible to blood parasites such as the mosquito-borne Plasmodium spp., which have been documented causing high morbidity and mortality in zoos and rehabilitation centres. However, to date no blood parasites have been detected in wild Magellanic penguins, and ...
